Versatile Veturi - వేటూరీయం - Part 1

I was not blogging these days. If I say this is due to busy schedules, it will not be completely true. Actually, losing peace of mind and hence the concentration is the main reason. In such situations, if I want to get back to track, something should happen that deeply touches my heart. An incident of this sort happened on 22nd May 2010. It is the death of Veturi Sundararama Murthy (వేటూరి సుందర రామ మూర్తి), a legendary Telugu film lyricist and poet, who instigated the interest for poetry among many Telugu youngsters like me.

When I was kid in 90’s, in holidays every day morning , while eating breakfast before proceeding to play games, I used to listen to All India Radio – Vijayawada, Kadapa (then Cuddapah) stations along with my mom (or dad or aunts or uncles). Lot of wonderful songs used to be played. When listening to one song, we never know what would be the next song so guessing it was always a thrill. But most of the time, one guess generally never used to go wrong. It was guessing the lyricist’s name. Whoever might be the music director, whoever might be the singers, whatever might be the film, majority of the songs were written by “THE” great Veturi garu. That is how I first came across his name.

Though I used to hum lot of his songs, as a boy, I never tried to understand his lyrics. Moreover I used to replace his lyrics with my own words, funny or obscene (sorry to say this :-) ), as situation demanded. I first keenly observed Veturi gari poetic skills in the song Yamahaa Nagari Calcutta puri from Chiranjeevi’s movie Choodalani undi. He might have written many better songs than this one, but the words, phrases used in that song sounded very rhythmic and poetic to me. The language was simple but very expressive. I still remember a few lines

బెంగాలీ కోకిల బాల తెలుగింటి కోడలు పిల్ల మానిని సరోజినీ

దేవతా మార్కు మైకం శరన్నవలాభిషేకం

అతిథుల గొడవట విధులకు సెలవట కలకట నగరుకు కిట కిటలో

Later at the end of my Intermediate (12th standard), my flair for Ilaiyaraja’s music inspired me to buy the music cassettes of classic movies like సాగర సంగమం, గీతాంజలి, సితార, సీతా కోక చిలుక, ఆరాధన, అన్వేషణ, ప్రేమించు పెళ్లాడు, అభినందన, రుద్రవీణ, స్వర్ణ కమలం, సంకీర్తన etc. Among these movies, first seven movies have songs written by Veturi garu. After listening to songs these from movies again and again, I started enjoying his poetry. What a versatile poet, really he is !!! A man who can play with words and bring out a beautiful song using simple, catchy Telugu words.

Sagara sangamam (సాగర సంగమం) album was the best example to illustrate his versatility. Every song was very different in mood and expression from others

నరుడి బ్రతుకు నటన ఈశ్వరుడి తలపు ఘటన ఆ రెంటి నట్ట నడుమ నీకెందుకంత తపన – Philosophical

పిలిచే పెదవి వణికింది ఎందుకో వణికె పెదవి వెనకాల ఏవిటో – Romantic

రాసలీలలాడినాడే రాయబారమేగినాడే -- చీరలన్ని దోచి దేహ చింతలన్ని తీర్చినాడే – Light hearted spiritual

Songs from Preminchu pelladu (ప్రేమించు పెళ్లాడు) are my all time favourites. I was very very excited when I got to know that they were penned by Veturi. The experiment done by him with Telugu words in those songs was beyond comparison.

నవ్వేటి నక్షత్రాలు మువ్వల్ని ముద్దడుంగ మువ్వ గోపాలుని రాధిక (వయ్యారి గోదారమ్మ)

ఆటవెలది ఆడుతూ రావే తేట గీతి తేలిపోనీవే

ముద్ద కావాలా ముద్దు కావాలా ఆ విందా ఈ విందా నా ముద్దే గోవిందా (గోపెమ్మ చేతిలో)

తనువు తనువు తరువు తరువై పుప్పోడి ముద్దే పెడుతుంటే (ఈ చైత్ర వీణ)

అగ్ని పత్రాలు రాసి గ్రీష్మమే మాయమాయె మెరుపూ లేఖల్లు రాసి మేఘమే మూగవోయే (నిరంతరము వసంతము)

His love for seasons (ఋతువులు), Chandassu (ఆటవెలది, తేటగీతి), birds, raagas is very much explicit because he used words related to them in most of his songs. We can say he coined many words and phrases. If Sri Sri (శ్రీ శ్రీ) is the first Telugu poet to form his own jargoan, Veturi was the first Telugu film lyricist who created his own "dictionary". There quite a words and phrases like them such as ప్రేమారాధకుణ్నిలె, శరన్నవలాభిషేకం, కలయిక - కల ఇక , సోకు పూజ , వయస్సునామీ. In fact there are many more, which I can't recollect now.

Songs in every movie he worked for, will have lines, that nobody can ever forget. Some of those memorable lines, which I like are

ఓ పట్టు చీర కట్టుకున్న పుత్తడి బొమ్మ ఈ కట్టు తోనే తరించేను పట్టు పురుగు జన్మ – Seethakoka Chiluka

మాగాణమ్మ చీరలు నేసే మలి సందేమ్మ కుంకుమ పూసే – Sithara

శారద వీణా రాగ చంద్రికా పులకిత శారద రాత్రము

నారద నీరద మహతీ నినాద గమకిత శ్రావణ గీతము – Sankara bharanam

నీ పలుకు నాదే నా బ్రతుకు నీదే - Panthulamma

చందమామ ఔనంటే వెన్నెల గేయా కలువ భామ ఆది వింటే పున్నమి గా

నా ఆశలు ఎగసి ఎగసి తారలతో కలిసి తలంబ్రాలు గా కురిసే వేళ - Subhalekha

తొలి పూత నవ్వే వన దేవతల్లే పున్నాగ పూలే సన్నాయి పాడే - Panthulamma

తడి నీడలు పడనీకే ఈ దేవత గుడిలో

చిరు చేపల కనుపాపలకిది నా మనవి - Geethanjali

గోపాలా మసజసతతగా శార్దూలా - Geethanjali

అబ్బా దీని సోకు సంపంగి రేకు

అమ్మ దీని చూపు మరుమల్లె తూపు - Aakhari poraatam

రేతీరౌతుంటే రేగే నాలో కచ్చా పగటి పూటంత ఒకటే ఇచ్చ

నిండు జాబిల్లికైనా ఉంది మచ్చ నీకు లేనందుకే నే మెచ్ఛా - Raakshasudu

If I start writing about some of his "mass" songs, recent songs, style and his influences on others, I guess, it becomes a book or series of books. Also, I understood one blog post is not sufficient to talk about his greatness, humane n humble nature and above all apathy showed to him by the government and film industry people.
